Delicious Mauritius! Ayurvedic Cocktails you must try….


We were featured on the At home with Galavante show.  Our host Christine earlier in the year had visited Mauritius and of course, fell in love with the beautiful island and its mouthwatering cuisine.  She was keen for her audience to learn more about the food on offer on the island.

The day of the filming we arrived fully kitted in our Mauritian inspired outfits Yusef wore a Lehenga an Indian type shirt, my mother kindly had given him and I wore one of my mother’s vintage sari blouses!  We had spent the previous day in Brooklyn at our local Wholefoods and Kalustyans buying all the spices and ingredients. From fresh aloe leaves, curry leaves and rum this, we packed everything but the kitchen sink and set off into the city.

The menu we showcased was a Mauritian inspired menu using Ayurvedic spices and foods. For those of you who have not have the chance to visit Mauritius this idyllic dreamy island- it’s off the east coast of South Africa.

Ayurveda is ancient Indian science dating back to 5000 years and a holistic health system geared to achieving balance in our daily lives between the body mind and spirit. Ayurvedic cooking promotes eating the kind of food that compliments your body type ( dosha’s as they often referred to). In Mauritian cooking, many of the vegetables, legumes, and spices have medicinal benefits and healing properties which are known to nourish your mind and soul.


The aim of the video was to educate the audience on the joys of Mauritian cuisine and to inspire New Yorkers to cook, eat and experiment with new flavors and spices.  By incorporating some of these spices and drinks into your diet and adopting the notion of moderation you can not only liven your spirit and but up your energy levels.

I hope to this episode inspires you to experiment with bold flavors and try different foods. After all, spice is life.

Here are the cocktail recipes

Zeenat Amaan – 

1 1/2 oz. Dark Rum

1 oz. Roasted Pumpkin Puree with Curry leaf

¾ oz. Lemon Juice

½ oz. Cardamom Simple Syrup

Garnish: Toasted Pumpkin Seeds on a small plate

Glass: Coupe

Aska which means balance in Sanskrit

  1oz. Aloe Vera juice

¾ oz lemon juice

3 sugar snap peas

½ oz simple

1 slice of Jalapeno

Garnish w pickled watermelon radish
